Carpe Diem

Yukino Ohmura

Ohmura, known for her artworks that use dot stickers used for stationery, created a series of works with a new motif of “flowers” during the state of emergency due to the novel coronavirus. As Ohmura faced the reality of “not knowing when death will come”, this series was inspired by the ancient Roman proverb “carpe diem (seize the day) ≒ Give it your all each day like this flower”, and was created through focusing on ordinary everyday thoughts. The series is composed of the following 4 pieces.
《Sending to You》 uses blue roses, which were a symbol of the impossible but were recently brought to reality through biotechnology and means “dreams come true” in the language of flowers. This piece expresses gratitude and hope for the people who surround her and support her activities as an artist. Baby’s breath spirea, which was in bloom when work on the series was started. Feeling transience and passion in the discreet garden plant that blooms as if snow was falling off its branches, 《Things That Were Suppressed》 reflects the feeling of being lost and the conflicting thoughts that arise throughout life. Orchids, which mean purity in the language of flowers. 《Conveying Love》 expresses the feelings towards her partner who she met when she was around 19 years old and has since shared over 10 years of her life with. 《Forever Beautiful》questions the practice of cutting flowers at their best moment and consuming their beauty, and by purposefully illustrating withered cosmos flowers with a sunset as the background, is filled with a message that supports life.
